“Thirsty?” I ask, gesturing toward the Neptunbrunnen. This fountain offers more than just a pretty picture. It has an exciting story and even donates drinking water.

The Neptunbrunnen you see before you is part of the enclosure wall of the former courtyard waterworks. Since 2004, this well has provided drinking water to the public. So feel free to fill your water bottle.

Let’s dive into the Neptunbrunnen’s past. In 1801, Friedrich Weinbrenner planned an extensive garden for Hereditary Prince Karl Ludwig. As part of that garden, the Neptune Fountain was created. It was the centerpiece of an underground grotto. This grotto connected the royal gardens under the Erbprinzenstra\u00dfe.

However, the grotto’s time was limited. The construction of the natural history museum on Friedrichsplatz forced its removal. The gargoyle of the Neptunbrunnen was moved in 1866 to the yard waterworks. That’s how it ended up here.

In 2004, the municipal utilities renovated the Neptunbrunnen. Stadtwerke Karlsruhe GmbH owns and operates this well. This ensures that the fountain continues to provide fresh drinking water.
