A vibrant pink streak cuts through Auckland’s urban landscape. That’s the Nelson Street Bridge or Te Ara I Whiti the Lightpath. It’s more than just a bridge. It’s a testament to innovative design and a symbol of Auckland’s commitment to cycling.

Before it became a vibrant cycleway this bridge had a different life. It served as a motorway off-ramp. Drivers found it tricky to navigate. The old ramp was a bit of a headache. A new off-ramp opened in 2005. This one made more sense for drivers. The old ramp was left unused. Then came an inspired idea.

Max Robitzsch a transport engineer had a vision. Inspired by New York’s High Line he saw potential in the old off-ramp. It could become a cycleway. He rallied support. Auckland Transport and the NZ Transport Agency listened. The idea took flight. The old off-ramp transformed. It became a striking magenta pathway.

A 160-meter long bridge connects Canada Street to the former off-ramp. It was a feat of engineering. Built in sections in Hamilton then transported for painting. The bridge sections were carefully lifted into place. Overnight closures of the motorway were necessary for this work. The result is stunning.

The Nelson Street Cycleway’s first stage opened in December 2015. It was hailed as New Zealand’s most ambitious cycling infrastructure project. The opening ceremony was an event. Ernst Zöllner Simon Bridges Chris Darby and Barbara Cuthbert were there. A year later the pathway saw about 750 cyclists daily.

The Lightpath section which is famous for its colour received several awards. It won an Excellence Award from the Institute of Public Works Australasia. It also won a Bike to the Future Award in 2016. International recognition came too. The Lightpath received a Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design award. It also triumphed at the World Architecture Festival. The Canada Street Bridge itself was a finalist at the World Architecture Festival.

The Nelson Street Bridge is more than just a pathway. It’s an award-winning piece of urban design. It’s a symbol of Auckland’s progressive approach to sustainable transport. It’s a testament to turning discarded infrastructure into something vibrant and useful. Today it is a much-loved part of Auckland’s identity. A pathway that lights up the city literally.
