“Termessos needs you.” Imagine that’s the call to arms that led to the founding of Neapolis. We are standing amidst the ruins of Neapolis, an ancient city near Antalya, Turkey. It’s a place where history whispers from every stone.

Neapolis sits on Kel Dağ. This location is behind Doyran settlement. The city had close ties to Termessos. According to research, it stood “at the crossroad of Pisidia, Lycia, and Pamphylia.”

Archaeological research introduced Neapolis to the world. Nevzat Çevik and his team conducted this research. Neapolis served as a military settlement connected to Termessos. Its purpose was military. It was watching for threats from the sea.

Today, reaching Neapolis isn’t easy. The journey involves a challenging path. Despite the difficulty, the views are rewarding. You can see the stunning Antalya scenery and the sea.

The remains here may not be as grand as other sites in Turkey. Still, Neapolis offers a unique glimpse into the past. The most visible remains include Lycian tombs. You can also see Roman temples and a Byzantine basilica.

As you explore, notice the necropolis at the access trail. Further up, you’ll find remains of houses. The best-preserved buildings are Roman temples. They were dedicated to Artemis and Dionyssos. A little way down from there is the basilica.

Neapolis contains remnants from the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods. Among the most significant finds are a Byzantine basilica. Also important are three Roman temples. There is also a Roman public square. You can also explore Roman monuments and a Roman necropolis. The well-preserved houses are especially notable.

Evidence of the past is all around. There are approximately ten sarcophagus tombs. There are also water wells. These met the city’s water needs. Finally, see the remains of a fortress.

The Akdeniz University archaeology department researches Neapolis. They are preparing a comprehensive book about the city. While exploring Neapolis, you are walking on the Lycian Way. Take your time to appreciate this beautiful place.
