The scent of incense hangs heavy in the air. This is Nazareth. This is not just any church. This is the GPIB Jemaat Nazareth Jakarta. Established in 1964 it began as a small gathering known as the “Perkumpulan Elim”.
It started humbly. Members initially met in a pavilion owned by a church family. They worshipped under the name Nazareth. In April 1966 they became part of the GPIB Eben Haezer Jakarta congregation. This wasn’t the end of their journey though.
By 1969 Nazareth received autonomy. It became the 47th GPIB church in Jakarta. This was a significant achievement. It marked a new chapter in their story. They acquired their own building in 1971. It was located on Jalan Tjutjut now known as Jalan Sunan Drajat. They purchased it from the Bethel Injil Sepenuh church.
Growth followed. By the 1980s the congregation boasted over 600 families. They had twelve service sectors stretching across the city. The church’s expansion continued. They bought land on Jalan Waru. However they faced challenges building there. Access issues and permits stalled the project.
Undeterred they acquired land next to their existing building. The current church on Jalan Sunan Drajat numbers 27-29 stands there today. The Nazareth parsonage is on Jalan Cakalang.
Their building project commenced in 1992. The Governor approved the construction. The cornerstone was laid in 1994. It involved a substantial undertaking costing Rp 795,000,000. The church was officially dedicated on May 15 1994. That day marked their 25th anniversary. The Director General of Protestant Christian Religious Affairs officiated. The ceremony included a special service.
Nazareth’s story isn’t just about buildings and dates. It’s a testament to faith and community. The church continues to serve. They adapt to the challenges of a changing Jakarta. Their members may move but the bond remains. They call it “We Are Nazareth Family.” It’s a legacy forged in prayer perseverance and a shared devotion. The spirit of Nazareth endures. It’s a beacon of faith in the heart of Jakarta.
