Picture this. You’re standing at the edge of what was once a bustling hub of naval aviation. Welcome to the Naval Air Station Seattle Historic District. This wasn’t just any airfield. It was a pivotal location in aviation history.

The Naval Air Station Seattle Historic District holds a special place in Seattle’s past. It served as a vital training ground for naval aviators. It played a key role during World War II. Think of the brave pilots who took to the skies from these very grounds. They defended our shores against threats from across the Pacific.

But the story goes beyond war. This airfield was the final stop for the first-ever aerial circumnavigation of the globe in 1924. This remarkable feat helped convince Congress to fully develop Sand Point. The area grew into a fully functional Naval Air Station. The former grass runways were paved in 1940-41. The main runway was nearly a mile long.

Not all flights ended successfully. Several training aircraft tragically ditched in Lake Washington. These wrecks remain submerged. Local divers frequently explore the watery graves of these planes. One such plane is a PB4Y Privateer. It rests 155 feet below the surface. Another sunken aircraft is a PV-2 Harpoon. It rests at a depth of 140 feet near Sand Point. These underwater relics stand as a sobering reminder of the risks taken by these brave aviators.

The Naval Air Station Seattle was eventually deactivated in 1970. The base was renamed Naval Support Activity Seattle. A large portion of the land was later transferred to the City of Seattle and NOAA. The airfield runways were demolished in the late 1970s. The land was transformed into Magnuson Park. This remarkable transformation created a park rich in history.

The Naval Air Station Seattle Historic District received a prestigious designation. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 2 2010. It was also named a Seattle landmark. Today many of the historic buildings have found new life. They house affordable housing sports facilities artist studios and breweries.

As you explore Magnuson Park today remember the rich history embedded in this land. The Naval Air Station Seattle Historic District is a testament to the courage innovation and legacy of those who served here. It stands as a vibrant reminder of Seattle’s aviation heritage.
