Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church

Nestled in the heart of Chicago’s Marquette Park neighborhood stands the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church. This isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to the devotion and artistry of Lithuanian immigrants who made Chicago their home. The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church’s story began in 1929 with a humble church. Its main altar showcased a reproduction of the Miraculous Image of Our Lady of Šiluva, adorned with a gold-plated riza. This devotion to Our Lady of Šiluva would shape the church’s future. In the 1950s, the parish dreamed of a grander edifice, a monument to their love for the Mother of God. Under the guidance of Msgr. George A. Paskus, construction began in 1953. The new Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, completed in 1957, is a masterpiece of Lithuanian Folk Baroque style. The gold-plated reproduction of Our Lady of Šiluva from the original church was enhanced and given a place of honor above the main altar. This cherished icon underwent further restoration in 2008, commemorating the 400th anniversary of Our Lady’s apparition in Šiluva. A stunning mural, painted by Sister Mercedes, depicts this apparition and graces the west side altar. The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church has become a destination, drawing visitors from near and far. Every September, during the Octave of the Feast of Our Lady of Šiluva, the church becomes a focal point of celebration. Parishioners and worshippers gather to honor Our Lady of Šiluva. Priests from Lithuania and across the United States join in the novena services. On a designated Sunday, a vibrant outdoor procession fills the streets with pageantry, uniting all Lithuanian parishes in Chicago. This tradition, initiated in 1952 with Cardinal Stritch’s blessing, continues to be a powerful expression of faith and heritage.
