What if a church’s humility reflected the spirit of its people? Here at the Nativity of our Lord Parish Church in Manila, that’s precisely the story we uncover. The Nativity of our Lord Parish Church, established on Christmas Day in 1982 by Cardinal Jaime Sin, stands as a testament to the community’s unassuming nature. Originally a chapel served by priests from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, the growing community yearned for their own space. In 1988, they pooled resources, and by 1999, a new church arose on Ermin Garcia Street. The church’s design is a simple modernist structure. The low ceiling symbolizes the community’s humble beginnings. The bell tower, with hints of Southwestern American Pueblo style, features a stained-glass window of the Sagrada Familia. Inside, the altar retablo holds three intriguing paintings. The left depicts the Nativity, drawing inspiration from Noël Coypel’s work. The center portrays the Crucified Christ, referencing Velázquez’s masterpiece. Above, inscriptions in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin declare “Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews.” The right painting showcases the Resurrected Christ, borrowing from Raphael’s Transfiguration and Raffaellino del Colle’s Resurrection of Christ. The anonymous artist’s decision not to sign their work further underscores the community’s spirit. It’s a contribution, not a claim to fame. The Nativity of our Lord Parish Church is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of unity, perseverance, and the quiet strength of a community.
