A colossal concrete frame. That’s the first thing you notice about the National Sports Centre. It dominates the landscape. A giant welcoming you to Crystal Palace Park.

This isn’t just any sports centre. It’s a Grade II* listed building. A testament to mid-century modern architecture. Think sleek lines and a stunning interior. The National Sports Centre opened in 1964. It stands proudly on the site of the former Crystal Palace Exhibition building. That building was tragically destroyed by fire in 1936. Before that even this very spot hosted FA Cup Finals between 1895 and 1914. Can you imagine the crowds?

The National Sports Centre was one of five National Sports Centres in the UK. It was originally run by Sport England. Now it’s managed by Greenwich Leisure Limited. Their Better brand logo is everywhere here. The athletics stadium alone holds up to 15 500 people. With temporary seating that number increases to an impressive 24 000. International athletics meetings are regular events. It’s not just about sports though. Coldplay Bruce Springsteen the Sex Pistols and Depeche Mode have all graced this stage with open air concerts.

Inside the National Sports Centre lies a captivating space. A central concourse with delicate concrete supports. Light pours in from skylights. It’s a truly magnificent sight. This central concourse splits the building. On one side you’ll find the pools. A 50m competition pool a diving pool with a dramatic reinforced concrete platform. On the other side is a sports arena. It’s used for basketball gymnastics and many other sports. The building is exceptional. Historic England says it’s exceptional in its vision. The range of facilities is incredible. It was designed to serve athletes from all over the world. There’s even separate residential accommodation in the park.

Sadly the 50m pool and diving pool are currently closed for repairs. But the Greater London Authority is funding the work. It’s a testament to the importance of this place. The National Sports Centre. More than just a building. It is a living legacy. A legacy that continues to inspire. A place of sporting achievement and cultural significance. It continues to shape this part of London. A place where history lives and breathes.
