Have you ever felt the weight of history in your hands? Here at the National Museum of Ethnology that weight is palpable. It’s in the intricately carved wooden sculptures of Portuguese folk art. It’s in the ancient stone figures whispering tales of traditions long past. This isn’t just a museum it’s a living archive of global cultures.

The National Museum of Ethnology in Lisbon holds an extraordinary collection. Over 40000 objects represent more than 380 cultures. These span 80 countries across four continents. Africa Asia and South America are richly represented. So is Portugal’s own vibrant folk heritage. The museum’s history is fascinating too. It began in 1965 as the Museu de Etnologia do Ultramar. Jorge Dias a pioneering social anthropologist introduced the field to Portugal. He and his team meticulously gathered these objects. Many were documented through fieldwork. This created an invaluable archive including photographs films and recordings.

The museum moved to its current building in 1976. An extension in 2000 added the Galleries of Rural Life and the Amazonia Galleries in 2006. These additions showcase Portuguese rural life and the diverse cultures of the Amazon. The museum’s permanent exhibition The Museum Many Things is truly special. It features objects from Portugal Indonesia Angola and Mali. You can see Balinese Wayang Kulit shadow puppets. There are also captivating puppets and masks from Mali. The exhibition also honors the ethnologists who built this incredible collection. These include Jorge Dias Margot Dias Fernando Galhano Ernesto Veiga de Oliveira and Benjamim Pereira. They were key researchers at the Centre for Ethnological Studies from the 1940s onward.

One current temporary exhibition is particularly thought-provoking. Deconstructing Colonialism Decolonising the Imaginary examines Portuguese colonialism in Africa. It’s a crucial reflection on the museum’s origins and the colonial context of its early collections. The museum itself acknowledges this past. It actively seeks to understand the provenance of its extra-European collections.

So take your time. Explore each artifact. Each mask each puppet each tool tells a story. They offer a glimpse into the lives and beliefs of people across the globe. The National Museum of Ethnology is more than a collection. It’s a journey through human experience. It’s a testament to the power of cultural understanding. It’s a reminder of our shared humanity. It’s a place that will stay with you long after you’ve left.
