Nestled amidst the vibrant landscape of Bukit Timah, stands National Junior College, a beacon of academic excellence. National Junior College isn’t just a school. It’s a living testament to Singapore’s commitment to education, a place where history and the future intertwine. Officially opened on May 14, 1970, by then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, National Junior College holds the distinction of being Singapore’s first junior college. Its establishment marked a pivotal moment in Singapore’s educational landscape, centralizing pre-university education and maximizing the use of specialized resources. National Junior College was envisioned as a training ground for future leaders, fostering alert and independent young minds with a strong sense of social responsibility. National Junior College has always prided itself on its diverse student body. It draws students from a wide range of secondary schools across Singapore, ensuring that every student, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to excel. The college emblem, a golden lion against a backdrop of red and white, embodies the spirit of Singapore. The lion represents the nation, while the red and white symbolize universal brotherhood and purity. The four white and five red bars represent the four official languages and the five stars of the Singapore flag respectively, embodying the ideals of democracy, peace, progress, justice, and equality. National Junior College offers a two-year pre-university course and a six-year Integrated Programme, both culminating in the GCE Advanced Level examinations. Over the years, National Junior College has continually evolved to meet the changing needs of students. In 1985, it pioneered the Art Elective Programme, followed by the Humanities Scheme in 1987. It became the first junior college to offer German as a subject in 1992. Further demonstrating its commitment to innovation, National Junior College introduced the four-year Integrated Programme in 2004, later expanding it to a six-year programme in 2009. This programme allows students to bypass the GCE ‘O’ Level examinations and proceed directly to the ‘A’ Levels. National Junior College is more than just classrooms and textbooks. It’s a place where students discover their passions, forge lifelong friendships, and prepare to make their mark on the world.
