Since 1983 the National Hellenic Museum has been working to collect and care for Greek American history. It was previously known as the Hellenic Museum and Cultural Center. The museum aims to engage and inspire visitors through innovative exhibitions and programs. It meticulously preserves an expanding array of artifacts archives and oral histories. The museum’s extensive collection spans thousands of years of Greek history from 1200 BC until the modern age. There are more than 18000 artifacts and 10000 archival items.
The National Hellenic Museum is the first and only major museum in the country dedicated to the Greek journey. It covers ancient times to the modern Greek American experience. Chicago has one of the world’s largest Greek populations making it the perfect location.
One of the most important core exhibits at the National Hellenic Museum is the Greek Story in America. It was gifted by Angela G. Paterakis.
