Whispers of power. That’s what I always think about when I’m standing in front of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines or NGCP. Established on January 15, 2009, NGCP is responsible for operating and maintaining the Philippines’ power grid.
NGCP isn’t just one company. It is a consortium of Monte Oro Grid Resources Corporation, Calaca High Power Corporation, and the State Grid Corporation of China. Think of it as a team of experts working together.
Before NGCP, the government-owned National Transmission Corporation or TransCo managed the grid. In 2009, NGCP took over, marking a shift to private sector management. This change aimed to improve efficiency and reliability.
NGCP’s main job is to ensure a stable power supply. They balance electricity supply and demand. They decide which power plants should generate electricity. They also provide daily power updates for Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. You can even find these updates in newspapers.
The company must allow equal access to its transmission system. It adheres to the Philippine Grid Code. They also follow the Transmission Development Plan. This ensures fair and reliable service.
In 2018, NGCP faced scrutiny over its concession agreement. There were concerns about the company profiting too much. Specifically, questions arose about allowing telecom firms to use transmission towers for fiber optic cables.
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines plays a crucial role in connecting the country. In January 2024, the Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection Project was completed. This connected the power grids of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao for the first time. Efforts to unite the grids began in the 1980s. Difficulties led to abandonment. NGCP revived the project in 2011. The project helps economic development by delivering stable power. It also enables energy resource sharing across the islands.
NGCP has undertaken many notable projects. These include the Hermosa-Duhat-Balintawak transmission line. They also include the expansion of the Philippine 500kV transmission network. These projects improve grid capacity and reliability.
Interestingly, NGCP uses various voltages depending on factors like distance. Luzon operates with 69kV, 138kV, 230kV, and 500kV. Visayas and Mindanao use 69kV, 138kV, and 230kV. The connections between island groups use 350kV.
The longest 500kV power line in the country is the Balsik-Marilao-San Jose-Tayabas-Pagbilao line. It stretches 552.4 km. It surpasses the Kadampat-San Manuel-San Jose line.
