Can you keep a secret? Here at the National Cyber Security Centre, secrets are their specialty. The National Cyber Security Centre, often called NCSC, stands as a vital part of the UK’s defense. Opened in October 2016, this isn’t just another government building. This is the central hub for the UK’s fight against digital threats. It’s a crucial part of GCHQ, the Government Communications Headquarters. The NCSC replaced several organizations, combining their strengths under one roof. These included CESG (GCHQ’s information security arm), the Centre for Cyber Assessment, CERT UK, and CPNI’s cyber-related responsibilities. The Queen herself dedicated the center in February 2017. At that time, Chancellor Philip Hammond announced a hefty £1.9 billion investment. He also revealed an initiative to embed 100 industry experts into the NCSC. Even the NCSC isn’t immune to pranks. In October 2017, technical director Ian Levy was targeted by email prankster James Linton. Linton created a fake industry event. Levy, ever vigilant, spotted the unusual email headers. He then collaborated with Linton to publish a security blog about the incident. In July 2024, the NCSC and international partners exposed a North Korean cyber espionage campaign. The campaign aimed to steal military and nuclear secrets. The NCSC, in collaboration with agencies like the FBI and NSA, issued a warning. The advisory detailed the actions of the Andariel group. This group, linked to North Korea’s Reconnaissance General Bureau, targeted critical infrastructure globally. They sought to steal sensitive information and intellectual property. The NCSC’s Director of Operations, Paul Chichester, emphasized the need to protect such vital data.
