Established in 1925 the National Center for Mental Health Plaque stands as a testament to a long history. This history started with a pressing need. The Insular Psychopathic Hospital as it was first known aimed to address the rising number of mental health patients.

Back then in 1925 two hospitals San Lazaro Hospital and the City Sanitarium struggled to cope. They were struggling with the increasing number of patients with mental health conditions. The Philippine Public Works Act No. 3258 authorized the construction of a dedicated facility. This facility was to be built on 46 hectares in Barrio Mauway Mandaluyong Rizal. This location was near Manila.

The National Center for Mental Health Plaque marks a place of refuge. In 1928 patients from San Lazaro Hospital found a new home here. Then patients from the City Sanitarium followed in 1935. The National Center for Mental Health became a dedicated institution under the Department of Health.

Over the years the National Center for Mental Health evolved. It has been also known as the Mandaluyong Mental Hospital and the National Mental Hospital. On November 12 1986 it officially became the National Center for Mental Health.

Today the National Center for Mental Health is a 4200-bed psychiatric hospital. It occupies 47 hectares of land in Mandaluyong Metro Manila. The National Center for Mental Health is PhilHealth-accredited. It provides essential mental health services.

The National Center for Mental Health offers a range of services. These services include preventive curative and rehabilitative mental health care. It functions as a Special Research Training Center and Hospital under the Department of Health. The National Center for Mental Health serves thousands of Filipinos each year. It attends to approximately 56000 outpatients annually.

Despite its vital role the National Center for Mental Health faces challenges. An increasing number of patients has led to a reliance on donations.
