Considering a mountain peak is usually represented by topographical maps, what labels do you think should be on the final photo of Nāpuʻumaiʻa? Here we stand before Nāpuʻumaiʻa. It is a peak on the island of Oahu. This place offers more than just a stunning view. It has deep historical roots.

Nāpuʻumaiʻa is not just a geographical landmark. It’s a place interwoven with Hawaiian culture. The name itself carries significance. “Kapālama” means “the enclosure of lama wood”. Lama is the Hawaiian name for ebony trees. These trees were endemic and used in religious ceremonies.

Imagine ancient Hawaiians ascending these slopes. They sought lama wood for their sacred rituals. This peak was part of their spiritual landscape. Traditional land divisions called ahupuaʻa ran from the seashore to the mountains. Nāpuʻumaiʻa was part of this system. It connected the land to the sea and the people to the resources.

The students of Kamehameha Schools wrote an original song. It is inspired by the ahupuaʻa of Kapālama. It speaks of water flowing from the mountains of Nāpuʻumaiʻa. It flows to the streams of Keanakamanō. Then it passes the kalo at Niuhelewai. Finally, it reaches the waters of Mokauea. The song “Waiwai Kapālama” expresses the 21st-century Native Hawaiian experience. It reinvigorates consciousness for the ahupuaʻa of Kapālama.

Stories of Kapālama tell of chiefs and supernatural beings. One tells of a chief from Kauaʻi. His name was Keāhua. He traveled to Oahu to marry Kauhao. She was the daughter of Kapālama. He angered Akuapehuale. Akuapehuale is a kupua or supernatural being. This kupua forced the couple to hide. They hid in the uplands of the Wailua River valley of Kauaʻi.

Later, Keāhua and Kauhao had a daughter. She was born as an egg. Chiefess Kapālama adopted her. She raised her on Oahu at her home. Her home was also named Kapālama. When the egg hatched, Lepeamoa appeared. She was a bird with rainbow-colored feathers. She could transform into a beautiful young woman. She wore a feather lei. A rainbow always appeared above her.

Her brother Kauʻilani searched for her. He looked for the rainbow sign of her presence. Kapālama advised him to hide. He hid in Lepeamoa’s house. He waited until she was asleep. Then he caught and held her. She acknowledged him as her brother.

Nāpuʻumaiʻa is more than just a peak. It is a reminder of Hawaiian traditions. It connects the past to the present. It embodies the spirit of the ahupuaʻa. The stories and songs keep its legacy alive. As we leave Nāpuʻumaiʻa, remember its significance. It’s a place where land, culture, and legends intertwine.
