Wonder why this tranquil expanse exists within Budapest’s XVI district? This is Naplás-tó TVT officially Szilas-pataki flood control reservoir. It is not a natural wonder but a carefully constructed haven.

Naplás-tó TVT was created in the 1970s by damming the Szilas stream in Cinkota. Its primary purpose is flood control. The lake mitigates storm surges. It safeguards the lower parts of the stream.

Since 1997 Naplás-tó TVT and its surroundings have been a protected nature reserve. It covers 150 hectares. This makes it Budapest’s largest locally significant protected area.

Naplás-tó TVT is more than just a reservoir. It is a vital resting place for many water birds during spring and autumn migrations. Over 200 bird species have been observed here. The Hungarian Ornithological and Nature Conservation Society organizes public bird ringing and birdwatching days.

Flora and fauna studies began in the early 1980s. Naplás-tó TVT is home to diverse plant insect reptile and amphibian life. The European pond turtle population has been monitored since 2002.

Access is regulated to protect Naplás-tó TVT. Walking is permitted only on designated paths. The reed beds are off-limits between April and October. People like to visit it. There are thematic nature trails and a lookout tower. Fishing is allowed in summer. Swimming is prohibited. Walking on the ice in winter is forbidden too.

The lake formed by damming the Szilas stream was created around 1975-1976. It prevents the stream from flooding. It collects water during snow melts and heavy rains. It was planned for irrigation. Recreational and sports facilities were planned too.

In 1982, the first road was built to Naplás-tó TVT through social work. The water was polluted. Fishing was not yet allowed. Fish stocking and shoreline landscaping were planned. The lake purifies water.

By 1988, the water quality had improved. The lake was stocked with fish. Organized fishing began. A popular name for Naplás-tó TVT is connected to soldiers. It is likely that the name came from Slovak settlers. They went to the stream to wash or tend animals.

The Szilas stream flows through Naplás-tó TVT. It is an ecologically valuable area. The protected area includes the lake reed beds marshes and the Cinkota forest. It is divided into three parts. These are the lake and its surroundings the Szilas stream meadows and the Cinkota forest.

The Cinkota forest was pastureland in the 1700s. It was afforested in the 1800s. It was destroyed in World War II. Reforestation began in the 1950s. Pine acacia oak and poplar trees were planted.

The Naplás-tó TVT tanösvény or nature trail is 4500 meters long. There are 18 stations. There are three thematic routes. These include a lake tour a forest tour and a meadow tour.

A lookout tower was built near Naplás-tó TVT. It has become a popular spot.
