Beneath these sweeping curved roofs stands Nanyang Auditorium. It is NTU’s pride and joy. The Nanyang Auditorium is one of the largest University Auditoriums in Singapore.
Let’s step inside this contemporary building. Its dynamic form symbolizes NTU’s desire to be a world-class university. This desire is for the new millennium. Nanyang Auditorium spans 12,886 square meters. It is centrally positioned on the campus. The Auditorium is located in the heart of Nanyang Technological University.
The main theatre can seat 1,674 people. This includes two handicapped spaces. Notice the interior’s architectural finishing. See the fabric-wrapped acoustic paneling. Feel the carpet flooring. Outside, observe the aluminum roofing sheets. Admire the aluminum-clad eaves. Look up at the full-height glass curtain walling.
Nanyang Auditorium was built within the NTU Main Complex. It was built to best serve the entire campus population.
Did you know that the large foyer can accommodate about 1,700 people? The Nanyang Auditorium also houses several function rooms. These rooms are for different events and purposes. The VIP rooms are the Blue and Green rooms. The multi-purpose room is the Crimson room. There is also an Exhibition Hall.
Equipped with state-of-the-art Audio Visual Technology, the Auditorium is the prime choice for events. These events may include Convocations. They might be Arts and Cultural Ceremonies. Musicals and concerts are also held here.
Now imagine this: It is 1963. The Nanyang University auditorium building has just been completed. It also houses lecture rooms for the Faculty of Commerce.
Nanyang University has a rich history. The university campus was built on land donated by the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan. This is a clan association. Mr. Tan Lark Sye officiated the groundbreaking ceremony. He was the Chairman of Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan. He also chaired the Nanyang University Council. The first batch of students was admitted on 15 March 1956. Mr. Tan Lark Sye and Sir William Goode declared the campus open. This was on 29 March 1958.
In 1980, Nanyang University merged with the University of Singapore. Together they formed the National University of Singapore or NUS. Later, in 1981, Nanyang Technological Institute or NTI was established. It was on the same campus in Jurong. NTI became Nanyang Technological University or NTU in 1991. This happened with the absorption of the National Institute of Education or NIE.
