Built for the 1967 Federal Horticultural Show the Nancyhalle stands before you. A testament to temporary architecture it’s a listed building now. Named after Karlsruhe’s twin city Nancy this former event hall has a fascinating past.
Initially designed as additional exhibition space the Nancyhalle was part of the Karlsruhe Congress Center until 2013. Architect Erich Schelling envisioned a structure with a limited lifespan. The hall’s glazed frame encloses two courtyards. Old trees grace these peaceful spaces.
From 2004 to 2007 a unique exhibition filled its space. The renowned designer Luigi Colani showcased his life’s work. Imagine the vibrant colors and futuristic forms filling this hall. It must have been quite a sight.
The Nancyhalle’s future was uncertain after the Karlsruhe trade fair moved. High maintenance costs threatened its existence. Then in late 2011 a new chapter began. The Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe found a temporary rehearsal space here. For seven to ten years actors dancers and musicians filled the hall with energy and creativity.
Today the Nancyhalle awaits its next act. Its history is a mix of grand exhibitions artistic displays and quiet rehearsals. The building stands as a reminder of temporary structures with lasting impact. A symbol of Karlsruhe’s connection to Nancy and its vibrant cultural life.
