“Ever heard of a tekke?” I ask pointing towards the Nalçacı Halil Camii. This is no ordinary mosque. It has a rich history as a former tekke.

Welcome to the Nalçacı Halil Camii. It is a serene testament to Istanbul’s layered past. This sacred space began its journey in 1625. Şeyh Halil Efendi founded it. He was from Antalya. This humble mosque transformed over the centuries. It became a revered center for spiritual learning.

The Nalçacı Halil Camii’s story is intertwined with the Şabani order. This order held its rituals here every Thursday. Imagine devotees gathering. They engaged in deep prayer and reflection. The air would be thick with incense. Their voices echoed softly within these walls.

The mosque owes its existence to Nalçacı Şeyh Halil Efendi. He passed away in 1631. He must have commissioned the mosque before then. The Nalçacı Halil Camii also carries the name Şeyh Tului Tekke Camii. This name honors the 4th postnişin, Şeyh Mehmed Tului Efendi. He was from Mudurnu. He died in 1756.

Over time the mosque fell into disrepair. Then, in 1874, Cemil Paşa stepped in. He was the son of Namık Paşa. He funded extensive repairs. He also constructed a wooden tomb for Nalçacı Halil Efendi. This act ensured the founder’s legacy endured.

Let me share a fascinating detail. Maraş Governor Abdullah Paşa added the minbar around 1750. Before becoming a vezir, he showed his dedication. Abdullah Paşa also built the Özbekler Tekkesi Mesjid in Üsküdar.

The mosque’s location has an interesting history. Until 2008, this area was known as Tabaklar Mahallesi. The Nalçacı Halil Camii is very close to Arakiyeci Hacı Cafer Camii.

Nalçacı Şeyh Halil Efendi rests in the mosque’s grounds. Other notable figures are also buried here. They include İplikçi Ebubekir Efendi and Şeyh Mehmet Tului Efendi.

In the 1940s, the üzeri kapalí türbesi, or covered tomb, was still intact. Şeyh Halil Efendi was also a poet. It is said that he recited two volumes of the Quran daily.

The Nalçacı Halil Camii faced neglect. By 1946, the mosque and tevhidhane were derelict. In the 1970s parts of the tekke were sold. But, thankfully, restoration efforts began.

Between 2010 and 2012, the mosque underwent extensive renovations. On March 2, 2012, it reopened its doors.

As you stand before the Nalçacı Halil Camii remember its journey. It evolved from a simple mescit to a significant tekke. It reflects Istanbul’s devotion to preserving its spiritual heritage.
