Across the Tataragawa River, Najima Bridge stands as more than just a passage. It connects histories, whispers tales of transformation, and offers a glimpse into Fukuoka’s vibrant past.

The story of the Najima Bridge is intertwined with the story of Najima itself. Once a little town northeast of Hakata, Najima boasts a history stretching back to the 3rd century. Empress Jingu is said to have launched her army from here. They sailed to Southern Korea and back. Legend says nine fossilized tree stumps mark the masts of her ships. Upon her victorious return, she founded Najima Shrine. It honored the goddesses of maritime transport.

Centuries later, in 1587, Kobayakawa Takakage built Najima Castle. It was strategically placed on Hakata Bay’s edge, surrounded by water on three sides. Even Hideyoshi himself was involved in the castle’s design. Najima became Hideyoshi’s regular stop during the Imjin War. The castle served as a vital supply base for Hizen Nagoya.

But Najima Castle’s life was short. Around 1601, it was demolished. Its stones and wooden structures were reused to build Fukuoka Castle. Today, relics of Najima Castle can be found around Fukuoka.

Now, focus your gaze on the Najima Bridge. Imagine the Meiji era. The first Najima Bridge appeared. Later, it was replaced by a stone bridge. That very bridge still stands today. An American air force plane snapped a photo after the war. It dropped relief supplies near the Najima Bridge.

Even in 1945, Najima was mostly open countryside. But the Najima Bridge remained. It was a vital link in a changing landscape. Today, the Najima Bridge is far more than just a way to cross the Tataragawa River. It is a symbol of Najima’s evolution. It connects the echoes of ancient battles to the modern hum of Fukuoka. It links the whispers of empresses and generals to the everyday lives of the people who cross it. As you stand here, take a moment to appreciate the Najima Bridge. Think of the stories it has silently witnessed.
