The story of the Najima Bridge is intertwined with the story of Najima itself. Once a little town northeast of Hakata, Najima boasts a history stretching back to the 3rd century. Empress Jingu is said to have launched her army from here. They sailed to Southern Korea and back. Legend says nine fossilized tree stumps mark the masts of her ships. Upon her victorious return, she founded Najima Shrine. It honored the goddesses of maritime transport.

Centuries later, in 1587, Kobayakawa Takakage built Najima Castle. It was strategically placed on Hakata Bay’s edge, surrounded by water on three sides. Even Hideyoshi himself was involved in the castle’s design. Najima became Hideyoshi’s regular stop during the Imjin War. The castle served as a vital supply base for Hizen Nagoya.

But Najima Castle’s life was short. Around 1601, it was demolished. Its stones and wooden structures were reused to build Fukuoka Castle. Today, relics of Najima Castle can be found around Fukuoka.
