In 1964, a seed was planted. This seed was the Nagy Sándor József Gimnázium, initially a branch of Budakeszi’s 1st General School. We stand before this now flourishing institution, a testament to the dedication and resilience of a community. Nagy Sándor József Gimnázium, or NSJG as it’s locally known, began its journey humbly. The first graduating class emerged in 1968, marking a milestone in the school’s evolution. Nagy Sándor József Gimnázium steadily expanded, adding specialized programs in music, physical education, and eventually, dedicated classrooms in 1971. The school faced a near-death experience in 1973 when the county decided to halt new admissions. Imagine the despair of the teachers and students. Many left, seeking opportunities elsewhere. But Nagy Sándor József Gimnázium, supported by the unwavering belief of the community, persevered. New admissions resumed in 1976, coinciding with the introduction of a specialized physical education curriculum. The school became a regional hub for athletic training, partnering with Vasas SC. This collaboration brought success to both the school and the sports club, with talented students contributing to various disciplines. The school’s namesake, József Nagysándor, would have surely admired this spirit. He was a man of unwavering conviction, even in the face of adversity. A military man from an early age, Nagysándor rose through the ranks, becoming a key figure in the 1848 Hungarian Revolution. He fought alongside notable figures like Ernő Kiss and János Damjanich. During the siege of Buda, Nagysándor and his troops were stationed right here in Budakeszi. His headquarters were located at what is now 187 Fő utca, a site the students of Nagy Sándor József Gimnázium commemorate annually. Nagysándor’s independent thinking and republican ideals ultimately led to his execution as one of the 13 Martyrs of Arad. His famous words, “Hodie mihi, cras tibi,” meaning “Today me, tomorrow you,” resonate as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom. Nagy Sándor József Gimnázium echoes this spirit of resilience and dedication. The school embraced information technology and language education in the 1990s. Today, it offers a five-year language-focused program with German and English specializations. The school maintains strong ties with the local community and boasts several international partnerships. It has truly blossomed from that seed planted in 1964.
