In 1991, a small group of just 15 believers gathered in a house in Jakarta. They were the founding members of what would become the Nafiri Discipleship Church. Originally named GBI Nafiri Allah, the church was part of the Gereja Bethel Indonesia (GBI) synod, affiliated with the Church of God Cleveland, Tennessee. Nafiri Discipleship Church, as we know it today, began its journey in this humble setting. The church experienced significant growth, a testament to its leadership and the burgeoning Christian community in Jakarta. This growth necessitated moves to larger spaces, eventually leading to the purchase of multiple buildings. In 2014, a pivotal year for the Nafiri Discipleship Church, the name was officially changed to reflect a renewed focus: discipleship. The church also adopted a new vision: βto make every member a disciple of Jesus in a relevant way, so that it has an impact on the environment.β This vision is actively pursued through cell groups known as CORE, discipleship classes, and a vibrant music ministry that resonates with contemporary audiences. Nafiri Discipleship Church has embraced technology, utilizing it in services and communication. This has made the church particularly accessible to millennials, who form a significant portion of the congregation. The leadership at Nafiri Discipleship Church recognizes the importance of staying relevant in a rapidly changing world. This is reflected in the church’s modern worship style, innovative programs, and focus on serving the community. Today, Nafiri Discipleship Church thrives in five locations across North and West Jakarta, primarily serving middle-class areas. The church boasts a congregation of 25,000, an incredible expansion from its humble beginnings. Pastor Josiah Abdisaputra, the founder of Nafiri Discipleship Church, continues to lead the church, guiding its growth and impact on the community. His responsive leadership and digital mindset play vital roles. Nafiri Discipleship Church stands as a testament to the power of faith, community, and adaptation in the 21st century.
