In 1799, a sprawling 90-hold estate near the old gunpowder tower received a new name: Nádorkert. It was a gift, bestowed upon Archduke Joseph, Palatine of Hungary, by Prince Joseph Batthyány. This Nádorkert, nestled along the Lágymányosi bay in Budapest’s 11th district, wasn’t always an industrial zone. Imagine this area in the 18th century. Nádorkert was known for its lively parties and gatherings. A gateway inscribed with the Latin phrase “O beata Solitudo – 1793 – O sola Beatitudo” welcomed guests. The inscription translates to “Oh, blessed solitude, oh, solitary bliss,” hinting at a tranquil escape. Nádorkert’s festive atmosphere contrasted sharply with this message of quietude. Over time, Nádorkert’s land was gradually built upon, erasing its original character. By the early 20th century, it had transformed. The area became a hub for industrial development. In 1911, the Buda Rolling Mill was built here, followed by the Kelenföld Power Plant in 1914. There was even a proposal in 1910 to relocate the University Botanical Garden to Nádorkert. This move never materialized, solidifying Nádorkert’s industrial fate. The 2001 census recorded no residential buildings in Nádorkert. It was considered “uninhabited.” Today, Nádorkert continues to evolve. The area, bordered by the Összekötő railway bridge, Budafoki Road, Hengermalom Street, and the Danube, has seen significant changes. The industrial landscape has given way to modern developments. New office buildings and residential complexes have reshaped Nádorkert. Despite these transformations, Nádorkert’s name, a relic of its past, persists, reminding us of its rich and varied history.
