Have you ever wondered about a place that seamlessly blends history, faith, and a passion for healing? Well, right here in Munich, stands the Mutterhaus – Barmherzige Schwestern, a testament to the enduring legacy of the Sisters of Mercy. The Mutterhaus, a sprawling complex with a rich history dating back to the 18th century, has been a beacon of compassion and care in the heart of Munich for centuries.

It all began in the 1700s when Louis Chauvet, a priest in a small village near Chartres, France, established the “Paulusschwestern” following the teachings of St. Vincent de Paul. Inspired by this work, Cardinal de Rohan, the Bishop of Strasbourg, sent young women to be trained by the Sisters of Mercy, who returned to Zabern in 1734 to care for the sick. From that moment on, they became known as the “Soeurs de la Charitie,” and the name Barmherzige Schwestern was born.

From that humble beginning, the Sisters of Mercy found their way to Munich in 1832, thanks to King Ludwig I, who was deeply impressed by their work. The two Sisters sent from the Strasbourg Motherhouse, Sister Ignatia Jorth and Sister Appolonia Schmitt, arrived in Munich and quickly set about bringing their dedication to care and service to the city. Sister Ignatia, a seasoned nurse, was tasked with leading the Allgemeinen Krankenhaus (General Hospital), while Sister Appolonia focused on training new recruits, laying the foundations for the order’s future growth.

Years later, the Sisters of Mercy established their own spiritual center, the Mutterhaus, next to the Allgemeinen Krankenhaus in 1839. This was a major milestone, symbolizing the spreading influence of their work far beyond the hospital walls. By 1835, their dedication had already gained them a stellar reputation, and word of their care and commitment attracted requests from other parts of Bavaria, leading to a steady expansion of their work across the region.

The Sisters of Mercy’s influence extended beyond Munich, as they founded new Motherhouses in Innsbruck (1839), Graz (1841), and Salzburg (1844). They were known not only for their work in hospitals and charitable institutions but also for their pioneering role in education, establishing schools and kindergartens.

The Mutterhaus – Barmherzige Schwestern stands today with a modern, airy design, reflecting a spirit of openness and connection to the world. It is a fitting tribute to the enduring legacy of compassion and care that the Sisters of Mercy have embodied for over three centuries. Stepping into the modern building, it might feel like stepping into a world untouched by time, but the spirit that permeates these walls is very much in tune with the 21st century. A place of peace, dedication, and a legacy of service, the Mutterhaus remains a source of inspiration and hope in the bustling city of Munich, a reminder of the enduring power of human compassion.
