Who can forget a mother’s love? Here at the Hepkeplatz in Gruna, the Mutter mit Kind sculpture embodies this timeless theme. The Mutter mit Kind, created by Dresden sculptor Ernst Hermann Grämer in the 1930s, has journeyed through time and locations. Originally gracing a horticultural exhibition, it later found a home in Hugo-Bürkner-Park. This park eventually became a water retention basin around 2010. The sculpture faced the ravages of time, suffering increasing damage over the decades. It was then carefully stored in the stone sculpture workshop of Dresden sculptor Julius Hempel. Hempel lovingly restored the Mutter mit Kind to its former glory. In early 2013, the sculpture group was finally installed here at Hepkeplatz. This location previously housed the “Blumenpflückerin” sculpture until 2012. The “Blumenpflückerin”, also known as the “Kniender Frauenakt” or “de Nacksche”, has since returned to its original location on Niedersedlitzer Bahnhofstraße. The restoration of Mutter mit Kind involved meticulous detail. The heads of four children were recreated based on historical photographs. Missing hands, arms, and other details were also added. Future restoration is planned for the mother and the fifth child, ensuring the enduring legacy of this poignant artwork.
