The story of the Muswell Hill District Synagogue is one of perseverance and community. The first Jewish families, the Landstones, Hochbergs, and Millstones, arrived in the area over a century ago. At first, prayer services were held in the Landstones’ home, but as the community grew, they needed a bigger space. In the early days of the 20th century, a building called the Athenaeum, on the site that Sainsbury’s now occupies, rented out their hall, which was later converted into the first Muswell Hill District Synagogue. The story doesn’t end here, though. In 1963, a new era began when the synagogue moved to its current location on Tetherdown, a testament to the community’s thriving spirit and their commitment to creating a lasting space for worship and connection. The community has grown and evolved over the years, but throughout its history, Muswell Hill District Synagogue has remained a place where people gather, find solace, and celebrate their shared faith.
