Sculptor Alexander Phimister Proctor meticulously modeled the mustangs from 1939 to 1941. It wasn’t until 1947 that the sculpture was finally cast in bronze. On May 31st, 1948, the Mustangs were officially dedicated to their place on the University of Texas at Austin campus. But this isn’t just any sculpture. These horses symbolize the untamed spirit of the West, a spirit that still echoes through Texas today.
