The Musikhochschule Lübeck stands as a testament to Lübeck’s enduring love affair with music. It is Schleswig-Holstein’s only music university, a beacon of musical excellence in a city steeped in history. Housed within 22 UNESCO-listed, heritage buildings, the Musikhochschule Lübeck isn’t just a place of learning. It’s a living museum, breathing life into the city’s rich past. Established in 1973, its roots trace back to 1911, when the pianist Marie Luise Kaibel founded a private conservatory. This conservatory laid the foundation for what would become a world-renowned institution. Today, the Musikhochschule Lübeck nurtures around 414 students from around the globe. They come to hone their skills, transforming into soloists, chamber musicians, orchestral players, singers, composers, church musicians, and music educators. The Musikhochschule Lübeck has a faculty of around 170 lecturers, including about 40 professors. Many of these instructors are themselves accomplished performers and pedagogues, bringing a wealth of real-world experience to their teaching. The university offers an array of programs, from “Music Praxis” for aspiring performers to “Music Mediation” for future educators. It even grants doctoral degrees in musicology, music theory, and music pedagogy. The Musikhochschule Lübeck extends its reach beyond its historic walls. It encompasses the Holstentorhalle, providing additional practice and teaching spaces. The Brahms-Institut, nestled in the elegant Villa Brahms, serves as a center for musicological research.
