Opened in 1968, Music Building East at the University of Texas at Austin has witnessed countless melodies and harmonies. Music Building East isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the power of music. The Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music calls Music Building East home. This prestigious school ranks among the top 3% in the country for its size. It’s renowned as one of the best public music institutions. The school’s history stretches back to 1914. Graduate courses began in 1924. By 1938, a faculty of nine, led by Dr. Ezra William Doty, offered doctoral degrees. In 1980, the addition of Bates Recital Hall, with its 700 seats, brought the entire school under one roof at Music Building East. The school’s name honors Sarah and Ernest Butler. Their $55 million donation in 2008 stands as one of the largest private gifts to a university. It’s the second largest for a music school. The Butlers’ philanthropy also extends to other areas of the arts. Dr. Butler supports the Austin Symphony Orchestra, while Mrs. Butler contributes to Ballet Austin and the Blanton Museum.
