Here, atop Blok M Square, stands the Musholla Nurul Iman. This mosque is not just a place of prayer. It’s a symbol of Jakarta’s blend of modern life and deep spirituality.
Musholla Nurul Iman is known as the largest mosque atop a mall in Indonesia. It can accommodate up to 14000 people. Imagine this bustling space filled with devotees, a true oasis in the city.
The story of Musholla Nurul Iman began after a fire in 2006. The PD Pasar Jaya was destroyed. A temporary shelter was created. Later, developers decided to build a large complex including a mosque on top.
Construction finished in 2009. It wasn’t easy. Mosque officials had to negotiate for a larger space. Initially, they were offered a smaller area on the first floor.
They appealed to the Governor of Jakarta, Fauzi Bowo. He approved the construction of the Musholla Nurul Iman on the top floor.
Initially, Musholla Nurul Iman was simple. Over time, carpets and ceilings were added. Renovations continue even now.
The mosque’s design is inspired by Middle Eastern mosques. Architect Muhammad Luthfi Ramdhani adapted styles from Medina, Mecca and Turkey. The goal was to create a center for learning about the sunnah.
The building is cube-shaped with golden domes. The walls have ornate designs of circles and stars. These designs add beauty and improve air circulation.
In front of the Musholla Nurul Iman, there is a miniature Kaaba. There is also a small garden. It features plants from the Middle East. You’ll find date palms, olive trees and fig trees. A small pool and three fountains enhance the view. The miniature Kaaba can hold 300 people.
The Musholla Nurul Iman focuses on teachings from the Quran and Hadith. Mosque officials ensure the teachings are purely Islamic. They emphasize practices exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad.
The mosque hosts regular kajian or studies. A popular one is led by Ustaz Khalid Basalamah every Saturday. It draws such large crowds that tents are set up outside.
Due to increasing numbers, the mosque expanded in 2016. Part of the parking area was used. Additional space was created at the back.
The Musholla Nurul Iman originally held 6000 people. With the expansion, it can now accommodate 12000 to 14000 during kajian.
Musholla Nurul Iman stands as a testament to faith. It combines modern life with spiritual devotion. It is a unique sanctuary high above the city.
