“A sanctuary amidst the urban clamor…” Musholla Jami’atul Khoir stands as a testament to faith and resilience. Right here, in the bustling metropolis of Jakarta, this unassuming mosque holds a captivating history, deeply intertwined with Indonesia’s struggle against Dutch colonialism. Musholla Jami’atul Khoir’s story begins long before Indonesia’s independence. In 1901, prominent Arab community leaders in Batavia, now Jakarta, envisioned a place that would uplift the social and educational standing of Muslims. This vision materialized with the founding of Al-Jam’iyyatoul Khairiyah, “The Association of Goodness,” predating other prominent nationalist organizations. Musholla Jami’atul Khoir initially focused on social aid, assisting those in need. It later expanded its mission to education, establishing a madrasa that offered free education. This act of defiance against Dutch educational policies set it apart. Classes were conducted in English, not Dutch, a clear signal of resistance. Musholla Jami’atul Khoir became a hub for Indonesian nationalists, connecting them with Islamic leaders in the Middle East. The mosque’s publications exposed Dutch repression to an international audience, even drawing the attention of the Ottoman Empire. This led to visits from Ottoman envoys, further fueling Dutch anxieties about the mosque’s growing influence. Internal disagreements emerged. A clash between conservative and reformist interpretations of Islamic law led to a division within the community, with some members leaving to form the al-Irshad movement. Despite this, Musholla Jami’atul Khoir continued its educational mission. In 1919, it formally transitioned into the Education Foundation of Jamiat Kheir. This strategic move allowed it to navigate the restrictive Dutch laws that sought to suppress indigenous social organizations. The school relocated to its current location in Tanah Abang in the 1920s, where it continues to thrive. Today, Musholla Jami’atul Khoir oversees a network of schools, from elementary to high school, and even a college. It stands as a beacon of knowledge and a living testament to the enduring spirit of a community that dared to dream of a better future amidst the shadows of colonialism.
