“The Opener.” That is the meaning of Al-Fattah one of the names of God. This name graces one of the main gates of the Istiqlal Mosque. Istiqlal Mosque is not Musholla Al-Fattah.

Istiqlal Mosque is Indonesia’s national mosque. It stands proudly in Jakarta. Istiqlal means “independence” in Arabic. The mosque commemorates Indonesian independence.

Wahid Hasyim Indonesia’s first minister for religious affairs had the idea. He wanted a grand national mosque. Anwar Cokroaminoto chaired the Masjid Istiqlal Foundation. Together they initiated the project.

President Sukarno embraced the idea. He supervised the mosque’s construction. In 1954 Sukarno was appointed technical chief supervisor. Friedrich Silaban won the design competition. He was the son of a Lutheran pastor.

Mohammad Hatta suggested a location. He wanted it near residential areas on Thamrin avenue. Sukarno insisted on Merdeka Square. This followed Javanese tradition. The king’s palace and grand mosque should be near the main square. Sukarno wanted it near Jakarta Cathedral and Immanuel Church. This symbolized religious harmony.

The Citadel Prins Frederick was demolished. It made way for the mosque. Sukarno laid the foundation stone on August 24 1961. Construction lasted 17 years. President Suharto inaugurated it on February 22 1978.

Seven entrances welcome visitors. They are named after Al-Asmaul-Husna. This means the names of God in Islam. The number seven represents the Seven Heavens. Ablution fountains are on the ground floor. The main prayer hall is on the first floor.

A central spherical dome covers the main prayer hall. It measures 45 meters in diameter. The number 45 symbolizes the 1945 Proclamation of Indonesian Independence. A stainless steel crescent and star adorn the dome.

Twelve round columns support the dome. They represent Muhammad’s birthday. The main floor and four levels of balconies create five floors. The number five represents the Five Pillars of Islam. It also represents Pancasila.

Inside geometric ornaments decorate the space. A mihrab and minbar stand on the qibla wall. Metalwork displays Arabic calligraphy. It spells Allah and Muhammad. It also features Surah Thaha verse 14.

A single minaret stands in the southern corner. It symbolizes the oneness of God. It is 66.66 meters tall. This incorrectly symbolizes the Quran’s verses. A 30-meter pinnacle tops the minaret. It symbolizes the Quran’s 30 juz.

Istiqlal Mosque can hold 200001 people. The main prayer room holds 61000. The preliminary building holds 8000. The open terrace holds 50000. Corridors and other places accommodate 81000.

Istiqlal Mosque shows religious tolerance. During Christmas it provides parking for Jakarta Cathedral worshippers.

Grand Imam Nasaruddin Umar leads environmental efforts. Solar panels save energy. Slow-flow faucets conserve water. A water recycling system minimizes waste.

Many dignitaries have visited Istiqlal Mosque. These include Barack Obama and King Salman.
