In the bustling heart of Jakarta, nestled within Kampung Pulo, stands Mushola Al Huda. A beacon of faith, its story is one of resilience, perseverance, and community. Mushola Al Huda wasn’t always here. Its roots intertwine with the nearby Masjid Al-Barkah, formerly Langgar Pak Tua Kiran. In the 1950s, the Muhammadiyah movement began to flourish in Kampung Pulo, and Al-Barkah became a hub for its followers. The very walls of Al-Barkah were built with the sweat and sacrifice of these early Muhammadiyah members, who carried sand from the Ciliwung River, brick by brick, stone by stone. They toiled tirelessly, their reward the simple act of prayer within its walls. Key figures like Muhammad Mansyur and M. Ma’ruf, grandson of the original langgar’s owner, held prominent positions within Al-Barkah. However, tensions rose between the Muhammadiyah and the more traditional Ahlussunnah, also known as Kaum Tua. Differences in practices, small at first, grew into insurmountable divides. Then, on a Ramadan night, the unthinkable happened. The Muhammadiyah community was asked to leave Al-Barkah, the very mosque they had poured their hearts and souls into building. They left peacefully, prioritizing respect for their faith and community over conflict. Undeterred, the Muhammadiyah community sought a new spiritual home. They found temporary refuge in a small, wakaf-owned mushola belonging to the Saenan family. This mushola, overflowing with worshippers during Ramadan prayers, eventually collapsed under the weight of the devoted. Yet, even this setback did not break their spirit. The community rallied, pooling their resources, determined to build their own place of worship. They purchased land and erected a modest structure of bamboo, wood, and a thatched roof – a humble beginning for what would become Mushola Al Huda. In 1961, the Muhammadiyah Ranting Rawadenok was established, with the Kampung Pulo community as members. This marked an important step in their journey. A few years later, in 1965, after a pengajian (religious gathering) and consultation with Kiai Abdul Halim, a high-ranking official in the Department of Religious Affairs, the mushola was officially declared a mosque. The first Friday prayers were held, led by Kiai Abdul Halim himself, solidifying Mushola Al Huda’s place as the spiritual center for the Muhammadiyah community in Pulo. The Mushola Al Huda you see today is the result of three transformations, each built upon the unwavering faith and dedication of the community. It stands as a testament to their resilience, a symbol of hope rising from adversity, a place where the whispers of prayer continue to echo through the heart of Jakarta.
