Amidst the lively tapestry of Jakarta, nestled in the Kemang district, lies the Mushalla Al Barkah. This humble place of worship holds a story that stretches back more than two centuries. Mushalla Al Barkah isn’t just a place for prayer. It’s a time capsule, whispering tales of Jakarta’s past. Built in 1818 by Guru Sinin, a revered figure believed to be a wali from Banten, the Mushalla Al Barkah initially stood as a simple structure made of rumbia leaves and coconut tree trunks. Imagine the scene: a small, unassuming building amidst a landscape of marshes, its roof rustling in the breeze. The Mushalla Al Barkah’s construction was a testament to the community’s dedication. The process involved intricate negotiations, requiring approvals from both religious leaders and the Dutch colonial government. Over the years, the Mushalla Al Barkah underwent several transformations. The community rallied together, contributing materials and labor. In 1932, wooden planks began to replace the original materials. Further renovations in 1935, 1950, 1960, and 1970 brought more changes, culminating in a complete renovation in 1985. Today, the Mushalla Al Barkah features ceramic tiles and an eternit roof, blending seamlessly with the modern cityscape. But beneath its modern façade, the spirit of Guru Sinin and the early community lives on. Behind the Mushalla Al Barkah, on the western side, lies a small graveyard. Among the weathered tombstones is the final resting place of Guru Sinin himself, who passed away in 1920. His son-in-law, K.H. Ridi, and grandson, K.H. Naisin, are also buried there. These graves serve as a poignant reminder of the Mushalla Al Barkah’s rich history and the legacy of those who shaped it. Even after his death, Guru Sinin’s influence continued to resonate. His wisdom and blessings were sought after, and his grave became a site of pilgrimage for those seeking spiritual guidance. Stories abound of his presence, with some even claiming to have prayed alongside him in spirit. Mushalla Al Barkah is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a vessel of stories, a testament to faith, and a living link to Jakarta’s vibrant past.
