Envision a time before Jakarta’s skyscrapers, when dense jungle blanketed the land. Mushala Al Mubarok stands as a testament to this era. It whispers tales of Pangeran Kuningan, a key figure in Jakarta’s transformation. Mushala Al Mubarok, also known as Masjid Al Mubarok, nestles near the Satriamandala Museum on Jalan Gatot Subroto. Its origins trace back to 1527. This makes it nearly five centuries old. It was established by Pangeran Kuningan, also known as Syekh Arkanuddin. He arrived with Fatahillah’s Demak-Cirebon forces. Their mission was to wrest Sunda Kelapa from the Padjajaran Kingdom. They renamed it Jayakarta, laying the foundation for modern Jakarta. Pangeran Kuningan led his people south, navigating the Krukut River to reach the dense, untamed area that would become Kampung Kuningan. He established his leadership here, centered around the mosque, then known as Masjid Kuningan. Today, we know it as Mushala Al Mubarok. The mosque has weathered storms, both literal and figurative. In the 1920s, Mushala Al Mubarok collapsed. It was painstakingly rebuilt upon its original foundations, preserving approximately 65% of its original structure. This resilience mirrors the spirit of Jakarta itself. The mosque isn’t merely a historical relic. It’s a living, breathing part of the community. It serves as a place of worship, a center for Islamic studies, and a quiet sanctuary amidst the city’s bustle. Designated as a historical monument in 1931 and later recognized as an ancient mosque in 1972, Mushala Al Mubarok continues to serve its community. It bridges the gap between Jakarta’s past and present. As you stand before Mushala Al Mubarok, imagine Pangeran Kuningan’s arrival centuries ago. Reflect on the mosque’s enduring presence, a silent witness to Jakarta’s evolution from a humble settlement to a vibrant metropolis.
