Chugga chugga chugga. Hear that rhythmic sound? That’s the Museumsbahn Hessencourrier calling you to a journey through time. Right here before you stands a testament to railway history. A vibrant community project the Hessencourrier is more than just a museum railway. It’s a living piece of Kassel’s heritage.

Founded in 1972 this non-profit organization dedicated itself to preserving historic railway vehicles. Many of these trains once served the Hessian railway lines hence the name Hessencourrier. The collection boasts a splendid array of steam and diesel locomotives passenger and freight cars. A true treasure trove for railway enthusiasts.

Since 1992 the Museumsbahn Hessencourrier has been operating a museum railway. Its route stretches 33.4 kilometers a single-track non-electrified line. This scenic journey starts south of Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe station. It winds through Baunatal and the southern part of Habichtswald Nature Park. It continues through Schauenburg and Bad Emstal finally reaching Naumburg (Hessen).

The train’s journey isn’t just about the destination. It’s about the experience. The line itself presents unique challenges. It navigates considerable changes in altitude over relatively short distances. One particularly steep incline boasts a gradient of 1:35. That’s approximately a 29% incline spanning 4.7 kilometers between Elgershausen and Hoof. A significant portion of the main track is also curved. Most of these curves have a radius of just 200-300 meters. This makes the ride thrilling and certainly memorable.

The Museumsbahn Hessencourrier offers around twelve public rides annually. They also handle charter trips. Along the route runs the Hessencourrier cycle path. It’s a roughly 42km long path. The Habichtswald-Steig hiking trail also follows the line. This offers passengers various ways to enjoy the beauty of the region. This railway line is not just about the past. It is a sustainable form of transportation that connects people with nature.

The Hessencourrier’s depot is located in Kassel on Johanna-Waescher-Strasse in Marbachhöhe Technology Park. This depot built on land owned by the association was constructed in phases between 2005 and 2012. It’s a modern facility that serves as both a workshop and a storage area for the museum’s collection.

More than just a ride the Museumsbahn Hessencourrier provides a unique and unforgettable adventure. It’s a celebration of railway engineering history and a testament to the passion of those who keep this legacy alive. So step aboard. Let the journey begin.
