Perhaps you’ve heard of a museum where time stands still. Today, we are at the Museum Transportasi. It’s a place where the evolution of Indonesian transportation unfolds before your eyes.

Established in 1991, the Museum Transportasi wasn’t always intended to showcase such a diverse collection. Initially, it was conceived as a railway museum. The plan was to display locomotives and carriages from Sumatra and Java. These trains had operated both before and after Indonesia’s independence.

However, a desire for broader representation led to a change of plans. Recognizing the need to reflect technological advancements, the museum expanded its scope. It aimed to exhibit all modes of transport. This included land, sea, and air travel.

President Soeharto officially opened the Museum Transportasi on April 20, 1991. But the journey began in 1984. Construction spanned six years before its grand opening. The museum occupies a 6.25-hectare area within Taman Mini Indonesia Indah.

Inside the Museum Transportasi, the collection is divided into modules. These modules are the Central, Land, Sea, and Air modules. Each module features original artifacts, replicas, miniatures, photographs, and dioramas.

The Central Module showcases traditional transportation from across Indonesia. These modes relied on human, animal, or wind power. Examples include the cikar, andong, bendi, becak, and perahu layar.

In the Land Module, you’ll find engine-powered land transportation. This includes road, rail, and river transport. A highlight is the cikar DAMRI. It served as military logistics transport in Surabaya and Mojokerto during the independence era.

The Sea Module displays engine-powered sea transportation. Here, you can see passenger ships and floating docks. Supporting equipment illustrates marine technology.

The Air Module presents the evolution of air transport. Exhibits include aircraft and airport equipment.

Outside, the Museum Transportasi continues to impress. You’ll find a first-generation locomotive and the Extraordinary Train. President Soekarno used this train during the government’s move to Yogyakarta. Also on display is a DC-9 PK-GNT aircraft. Garuda Indonesia once flew this plane to ASEAN countries and Australia. You can even explore its interior, including the cockpit. A lighthouse from 1879 stands as a rare artifact.

The Museum Transportasi collects, preserves, and exhibits the history and development of transportation. It highlights transportation’s role in national development. The museum aims to educate visitors about the evolution of transportation technology. It also serves as an educational and recreational space.

A visit to the Museum Transportasi offers a nostalgic journey. It allows visitors to reconnect with the vehicles that once shaped Indonesia. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday. The Museum Transportasi is waiting to take you on a journey through time.
