In the heart of Jakarta, nestled amidst the bustling urban landscape, lies a tranquil oasis known as Museum Taman Prasasti. Have you ever imagined stumbling upon a serene park filled with weathered tombstones and intricate sculptures? Museum Taman Prasasti, formerly known as Kebon Jahe Kober, offers a unique glimpse into Jakarta’s rich history. Established in 1795 by the Dutch colonial government, Museum Taman Prasasti initially served as a cemetery for prominent Dutch figures. The cemetery, spanning almost six hectares, quickly became the final resting place for notable individuals like Olivia Mariamne Raffles, the first wife of Governor General Thomas Stamford Raffles. The museum’s collection boasts a fascinating array of Dutch gravestones, some dating back to the 17th century. These stones, marked with the inscription “HK” for “Hollandsche Kerk,” showcase a variety of architectural styles, from Javanese-Hindu to neo-gothic and classical. Museum Taman Prasasti also houses the original coffins of Indonesia’s first president and vice president, Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta. Originally, Kali Krukut river flowed near the cemetery, serving as a waterway for transporting the deceased. Following Indonesia’s independence, the cemetery transitioned into a Christian burial ground. Years later, in 1975, the cemetery gates closed to make way for government offices, with remaining bodies moved to Tanah Kusir Cemetery. Today, Museum Taman Prasasti stands as a captivating open-air museum, preserving a unique piece of Jakarta’s past. The museum’s serene atmosphere and historic artifacts offer a poignant reminder of the lives that shaped this vibrant city.
