Beneath the distinctive kris-shaped roof of Museum Pusaka, a story unfolds. Museum Pusaka isn’t just a building. It’s a guardian of Indonesia’s rich heritage. The museum opened its doors on April 20, 1993, thanks to President Soeharto. Originally, the impressive collection within these walls belonged to Dra. Hj. Sri Lestari Mas Agung. She generously gifted it to Hj. Siti Hartinah Soeharto, who chaired the Harapan Kita Foundation. Over time, the collection grew, representing the diverse weaponry of Indonesia’s 26 provinces. Museum Pusaka’s mission is threefold. It preserves these historic weapons. It educates visitors about their cultural significance. And it serves as a hub for weapons research. The museum houses several dedicated spaces. These include an exhibition area, information room, library, and even a conservation room. Within the exhibition space, you’ll find more than just weapons. Different types of wood used in their creation are also on display. You can even see a besalen, the traditional workshop of a keris craftsman. Museum Pusaka showcases some truly remarkable pieces. The Nagasasra Sabuk Inten Keris from the Mataram era is a highlight. There’s also the kujang from the Padjajaran era, a Singa Barong Tinatah Mas Keris, and various swords and daggers from different kingdoms and eras. Museum Pusaka is a dynamic place. Besides the permanent exhibitions, it hosts temporary displays and special activities like penjamasan ceremonies. These ceremonies involve cleaning and spiritually revitalizing the kris, connecting us to the beliefs of those who once wielded them. Museum Pusaka is more than just a museum. It’s a living testament to Indonesia’s warrior traditions and the artistry of its craftsmen.
