“Ever wondered about the lungs of Indonesia?” I ask you. Right here in Jakarta stands a tribute to them. We are standing in front of Museum Kehutanan Ir. Djamaludin Suryohadikusumo. It is a unique place dedicated solely to forestry.

This museum began its journey as Museum Kehutanan Manggala Wanabakti. That was on August 24, 1983. President Soeharto himself inaugurated it. Then on June 5, 2015, a change occurred. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry took over its management. It was then officially renamed Museum Kehutanan Ir. Djamaludin Suryohadikusumo. Its mission is clear. It serves as a central hub for forestry information. It also acts as a vital documentation center for Indonesia.

Step inside and you will discover a treasure trove of knowledge. The building has two floors. The first floor unveils forestry artifacts. It displays different types of forests in miniature dioramas. These realistic scenes bring the forests to life. Venture upstairs. There, you will find even more about Indonesia’s forests. The displays include captivating forestry-themed photographs.

Many of the museum’s collections came from Soedjarwo. He was the first Minister of Forestry in Indonesia. His contributions shaped the museum’s exhibits.

Before you enter, take a moment to appreciate the 139-year-old teak tree. It stands proudly near the museum’s entrance. Inside, you will encounter a variety of wood types. There is teak, meranti, and kampar. Also, explore products made from bark, sap, flowers, and leaves. Discover camphor, paper, polish, sandalwood oil, and cinnamon. The Museum Kehutanan showcases carvings and traditional household items. See hunting tools and clothing. Beyond wood, admire natural silk products. They come in various colors and patterns. Information about their creation accompanies each piece.

The Museum Kehutanan Ir. Djamaludin Suryohadikusumo is more than just a building. It is a gateway. It connects us to the natural world. It reminds us of the importance of preserving our forests. As you leave, carry a piece of this knowledge. Share it with others. Let us all contribute to protecting Indonesia’s green heritage.
