Imagine Brazil’s naval history brought to life right before your eyes. Here at the Museu Naval, that is exactly what you will find. This museum stands in a centuries-old building on Rua Dom Manuel. It resides in the heart of Rio de Janeiro.

The Museu Naval’s permanent exhibit is called “The Naval Power in the Formation of Brazil.” It occupies seven rooms on the ground floor. This exhibit highlights the crucial role of naval power. It shows its importance in Brazil’s history and its present day. Brazil’s discovery, colonization, and numerous invasions came from the sea. This makes the history of Brazil’s navy incredibly significant. Sadly it remains largely unknown to many.

Inside the Museu Naval, you will see many important objects. There are naval models that show miniature ships. You can view recovered cannons and figureheads. See medals and various other artifacts that tell stories. The Museu Naval presents these items through historical facts. It uses a contemporary context and interactive sound and image resources. This creates an engaging experience for visitors.

In the Pátio d’Armas, look up. “Birds of the Seas of Brazil” mobile hangs. It features 52 birds that represent twelve species. These birds fly over Brazil’s seas. As you walk through the Pátio d’Armas, look down. You might be stepping over a mine. It was used in World War II. Or you might see a B-57 torpedo from 1894. These objects are displayed in large glass cases built into the floor.

Temporary exhibitions happen on the building’s second floor. There is also an education room for school groups. The Museu Naval also has an auditorium on the third floor. It is used for events. The Museu Naval is part of the Navy’s Cultural Complex. Its mission is to preserve Brazil’s naval heritage. It also aims to contribute to the understanding of Brazilian history.

The Museu Naval complements the National History Museum. The Museu Naval focuses on ships and the sea. The National History Museum holds a vast collection of historical objects. Both museums touch on the history of Brazil. They contain material records that pertain to this history. The National History Museum is just a short distance from the Museu Naval.

The Museu Naval’s exhibits include recreations of military and merchant ships. There are paintings, coins, navigation instruments, and weapons. The museum displays both old and new ship models. You will see impressive watercolors of old sailing vessels. Rare photographs of families, crews, and vessels are displayed. The Museu Naval also portrays famous naval battles. They include the first naval battle in Santos Bay in 1580.

The Museu Naval is adorned with objects and artifacts in chronological order. You’ll find historical astronomical, scientific, and navigation instruments. Decorative arts, weapons, flags, uniforms, and medals are here too. Supplies of seafarers and personal belongings of sailors are on display. Marvel at the 25 oil paintings by Carlos Alfredo Hablitzel. These paintings show the greatest Brazilian and foreign naval episodes.

The Museu Naval also houses a photo gallery. It commemorates major naval battles since the Brazilian Navy’s formation. Before you leave, visit the gift shop. Find souvenirs fashioned after the museum’s exhibits. The Museu Naval truly inspires people to look to the seas and the skies.
