Can you imagine a place where centuries of Portuguese military history unfold before your very eyes? Welcome to the Museu Militar de Lisboa. This isn’t just a museum it’s a journey through time. From its beginnings in 1842 in the Royal Army Arsenal the Museu Militar has grown to become the largest military museum in Portugal. It was organized by Baron of Monte Pedral to store and conserve military material.

The museum’s story is one of evolution. It started as the Artillery Museum in 1851 during the reign of Queen Maria II. Only in 1926 did it receive its current name. The building itself is a testament to history. It was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1963. It continues to host temporary exhibitions and cultural events.

Step inside and you’ll discover a remarkable collection. The bronze artillery pieces are considered among the most complete in the world. Each piece is a historical document. Their heraldic inscriptions and symbols are fascinating. The ornamentation reflects the styles of their respective foundries. You’ll also see twenty-six tile panels. These date from the 18th 19th and early 20th centuries. They depict major events in Portuguese history from 1139 to 1918. Artists like Jose Estavao Cancela Victor Pereira Gustavo Bordalo Pinheiro and Leopoldo Batistini created these masterpieces.

The Museu Militar’s collection is vast. It showcases paintings from renowned Portuguese artists. Think Adriano Sousa Lopes Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro Jose Malhoa Carlos Reis and Veloso Salgado. Sculptures by Delfim Maya Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro and Jose Nuncio are equally impressive. The museum’s collections are spread across 33 exhibition spaces.

Don’t miss the Vasco da Gama Room. It features antique cannons and murals depicting Vasco da Gama’s voyage to India. Upstairs you will find rooms dedicated to the First World War. Other exhibits trace the evolution of weaponry in Portugal. From flint blades and spears to shotguns the journey is complete. The courtyard displays the history of Portugal. It does this through 26 tile panels. These panels tell the story from the Reconquista to the First World War.

You’ll also find a room with miniature pieces. In total the museum boasts around 26000 artifacts. A hidden gem is the Sala dos Gessos. This room contains molds for statues of important Portuguese figures. One is a mold of the statue of King Jose I in Praca do Comercio. The oldest part houses the Portuguese artillery section. It showcases the carriage that transported the columns of the Arco da Rua Augusta after the 1755 earthquake. The Museu Militar de Lisboa isn’t just a museum. It’s a captivating journey through Portuguese military history. A journey you won’t soon forget.
