The Museu Aeroespacial opened its doors in 1976. The idea for a museum like this dates back much further to 1943. Then-Minister of Aeronautics Salgado Filho envisioned it. However it took many years and several attempts before it became a reality. Lack of space and resources were initial hurdles.

Thirty years later the dream took flight. President Emílio Garrastazu Medici established the museum’s core in 1973. The old Escola de Aeronáutica buildings were repurposed. Restoration began in 1974. This included aircraft engine and weapons restoration. They also collected documents photographs and other historical items.

The museum’s collection is truly remarkable. It boasts over 150 aircraft. Many were operated by the Brazilian Air Force. Others belonged to the Navy or Army. It showcases the evolution of Brazilian aviation and aerospace technology. It holds a significant bibliographic collection with about five thousand books. There is also an important historical archive. This includes documents photographs negatives and films. A truly captivating piece is Santos Dumont’s preserved heart. It is displayed on the second floor.

The Museu Aeroespacial preserves military aviation. It also shows the wider development of Brazilian aviation and its industry. The museum has an exhibit about the Brazilian Space Program. It is shown in the section on the early days of Brazilian aviation. International collaborations have brought in aircraft never flown in Brazil. This further enhances the museum’s global significance.

In 2012 five more aircraft were added to the collection. Among them was a historic AT-26 Xavante. It was the first aircraft built in 1971. Also a Boeing 737-200 which was used to transport eight Brazilian presidents. This adds to the rich history of the museum.
