Did you know that the Museos del Gaucho y de la Moneda has moved to a new location? Since October 3rd, 2024, the Museos del Gaucho y de la Moneda resides in the historic Casa Central del Banco República. This fusion brings together two iconic collections that span centuries of Uruguayan history.
Since its creation, the Museos del Gaucho y de la Moneda has been key in preserving both the gaucho culture and the country’s numismatic history. It has become a regional reference point. The reopening marks a new beginning for the museum. It now offers an enriching experience that combines tradition and modernity.
Inside the Museos del Gaucho y de la Moneda, you can explore more than 300 art pieces. The museum offers a modern approach with visual resources that enhance the visitor experience. The collection of Creole silverware is a highlight. Sculptures by prominent national artists are displayed. Look for works by José Belloni and José Luis Zorrilla de San Martín. They are true jewels of Uruguay’s cultural heritage.
Let’s step inside the Casa Central del Banco República. The building was designed by the Italian architect Juan Veltroni. In the central hall, you will find six rooms. Behind the central counter, old payment and collection boxes are preserved. Silver and gold coins are on display.
Don’t miss the immersive room. It features screens projecting details of artworks related to the museum’s themes. The Museos del Gaucho y de la Moneda presents a refreshed museological approach. It aims to offer the public an enriching experience. This blends tradition with modern displays.
The original collection started with Professor Fernando O. Assunção. After almost 25 years, he compiled pieces from private collections. These collections belonged to national and Argentinian figures. People like Leonardo Danieri and Fernán Silva Valdés. Objects from Aarón de Anchorena and María S. L. de Vidiella have been added.
The Museos del Gaucho y de la Moneda is located at Cerrito 351, corner of Zabala. It is open Mondays to Saturdays. You can visit from 10 AM to 6 PM. Guided tours about the gaucho are available. They start at 10:30 AM and run every hour. The last tour begins at 4:30 PM.
Note that there are some accessibility limitations. There is no auditory, intellectual, psychosocial or visual accessibility. The space offers horizontal movement.
