Back in 1836 this land was Rosas’ military camp. He governed Buenos Aires then. As the area developed Rosas wanted a house. It was to be a temporary lodging for him. That house is now the Museo Juan Manuel de Rosas.
Imagine the year 1840. Juan Manuel de Rosas orders the construction of the Campamento de Santos Lugares. It was on the site of a former convent. This camp became a vital center. Soldiers trained here for the Federal Army.
From here troops marched. They faced Anglo-French naval forces in 1845. This was the Battle of Vuelta de Obligado. It was a key act of defense. José de San Martín bequeathed his saber to Rosas. This saber had accompanied him in the War of Independence. He gifted it to the Restorer.
Rosas needed a place close to his duties. He built a house 100 yards from the camp command. This is why the site became the Museo Juan Manuel de Rosas in 1993.
After the Battle of Caseros Brazilian soldiers stormed the house. They destroyed furniture. They seized weapons and war trophies. These included flags of the Rosista federation. General José María Paz ordered its use as a boys’ school. Diego Pombo, a Spanish teacher, ran it from 1853 to 1857.
The Comastri family bought the house in the early 20th century. They lived there until 1988. Then the Municipality of General San Martín purchased it. They transformed it into the Museo Juan Manuel de Rosas. Municipal Ordinance No. 3475/88 led to its creation. Historian Julio Mario Luqui-Lagleyze explained. The museum’s current look differs from the original Casa de Rosas.
The Museo Juan Manuel de Rosas underwent improvements in 2017. The permanent exhibition was reorganized. LED screens were added.
