The Museo Interactivo de Matemática, also known as MateUBA Museum, has a unique origin. It was conceived in 1997 by Dr. Leonard Echagüe. He was a professor at the Facultad de Arquitectura Diseño y Urbanismo of the Universidad de Buenos Aires. Students from the FADU actively participated in its realization. They contributed designs and built objects. They even bought materials for the museum. The Museo Interactivo de Matemática officially opened in September 1998.
Echagüe drew inspiration from a tradition in German universities. Since the late 19th century, mathematics departments used models to illustrate algebraic surfaces and curves. He recognized the importance of visual aids in conveying complex ideas. The museum aims to present mathematical concepts in a creative way.
