A cinematic marvel awaits us. Before us stands the Museo del Cine a treasure trove of Mexican and international film history.

The Museo del Cine or Cineteca Nacional is more than just a museum. It’s a living testament to the power of cinema. Founded in 1974 it’s a vital institution for film preservation and promotion. It began its life as part of the National University UNAM in the 1940s. This was during the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema.

In 1974 it found its own space at the National Center for the Arts CENART on Rio Churubusco. Sadly most of the original facilities were destroyed in a fire in 1982. The Cineteca we see today opened its doors in 1984 with four theaters. Ten years later vaults were added to house the national film collection.

A major renovation in 2012 transformed the Cineteca into the Cineteca Nacional del Siglo XXI. It now boasts ten theaters and a giant outdoor screening area. A digital restoration laboratory an expanded documentation center and a video library were added. Restaurants an exhibition gallery and a bookshop complete the experience.

Did you know that even today many Mexico City residents believe the Cineteca is located in Coyoacán? It’s not. The Metro Coyoacán station which is also not in Coyoacán is only an eleven-minute walk away. This makes it surprisingly convenient for moviegoers across the city. Over a million people attend screenings annually. There’s always something fascinating being shown.

This isn’t just about watching films. This is about experiencing the vibrant energy of Mexican cinema. It’s a place where history unfolds on the silver screen. It’s a place where the past present and future of cinema converge. So step inside and let the magic begin.
