Within the heart of Mexico City’s bustling Centro Histórico stands the Museo de la Policía. This isn’t just a museum. It’s a time capsule holding the captivating story of law enforcement in Mexico’s capital. The Museo de la Policía opened its doors in 1991. Its mission was to illuminate the world of policing, showcasing its history, values, and evolution. The museum’s home is a stunning Porfirian-era building, a work of art in itself. Designed by Federico Mariscal, a student of Adamo Boari (the architect behind Palacio de Bellas Artes), the building blends Art Deco with eclectic touches of Romanesque, pre-Hispanic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. Originally opened in 1908, this grand structure served as a fire station, courthouse, and police inspection site. This multifaceted role speaks volumes about the scale of the city back then, a time when Mexico City’s diameter spanned a mere twelve kilometers. Inside the Museo de la Policía, dioramas, photographs, and artifacts weave a narrative of Mexican society from pre-Hispanic times to the present day. The museum highlights the institutional structure of public security in Mexico City. It showcases the evolving role of the police, their functions, and the transformations they’ve undergone. You can see a vintage Ford from the early 20th century, a Harley Davidson motorcycle, and police uniforms from around the globe. Trophies and medals offer glimpses into moments of recognition and bravery. The museum even housed a temporary exhibition on serial killers, a chilling yet fascinating exploration of criminal minds. Sadly, the Museo de la Policía was evicted from its historic home in December 2019. The Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) took over the building. Their aim is to reshape the image of the police, focusing on community reintegration and respect for human rights. While its future remains uncertain, the Museo de la Policía leaves behind a legacy of preserving the history of law enforcement in Mexico City.
