Ever wondered where you can find Central America’s finest contemporary art? It’s right here at the Museo de Arte Fundación Ortiz-Gurdián in León. This isn’t just a museum. It’s a journey through art history housed in stunning colonial architecture.

The Museo de Arte Fundación Ortiz-Gurdián isn’t just one building. It comprises six beautifully restored residences. These homes date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The Ortiz-Gurdián family acquired and lovingly restored them starting in 1999. They transformed these historic buildings into a unique cultural space.

Our journey begins with Casa Norberto Ramírez. This was the first building of the Museo de Arte Fundación Ortiz-Gurdián. Norberto Ramírez called this suntuosa casa home. He was the head of state of Nicaragua from 1849 to 1851. Today, it showcases European art from the 15th to the early 20th centuries. You will also discover colonial art from the 18th and 19th centuries. There is pre-Columbian and contemporary ceramics from San Juan de Oriente on display. Finally, you will find Latin American art and a hall dedicated to Nicaraguan masters Rodrigo Peñalba and Armando Morales.

Next is Casa Derbyshire. It opened in 2002. The Derbyshire family built it in the late 19th century. Dr. Juan Derbyshire belonged to this family. He was a respected ophthalmologist. He studied at the Sorbonne in Paris. Casa Derbyshire houses the Colección Integración. This is a selection of works by Central American artists. It also features Latin American art. Three halls host temporary exhibitions.

Then we have Casa Martha Juárez. The renowned physician and jurisconsult Lic. Gregorio Juárez once lived here. He held public and civil positions in León in the mid-19th century. He was an academic reference in Nicaragua. This house displays art movements from post-war America. Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, and Minimalism are all represented.

Casa Francisco Juárez is next. It was also part of Lic. Gregorio Juárez’s residence. The art here reflects movements from interwar Paris. These movements greatly influenced artists. You’ll see artistic expressions from the second avant-garde of the early 20th century. Also, movements influenced by these from mid-century are shown.

Casa Deshon is a beautiful example of 19th-century León architecture. It features four corridors, a central garden, and spacious rooms. The Deshon family once called it home. It holds a contemporary art collection. This includes award-winning works from Nicaraguan visual arts biennials. You’ll also see pieces from Central American biennials.

Finally, there is Casa Delgadillo. It was originally part of Norberto Ramírez’s house. Its corridors display works by influential Nicaraguan artists. Rodrigo Peñalba and his students from Grupo Praxis are featured. There is also primitive art from various Nicaraguan regions. Contemporary artists influencing the current national art scene are exhibited.

The Museo de Arte Fundación Ortiz-Gurdián is more than just a museum. It’s a celebration of art and history. It connects the past with the present. As you wander through these houses, you’re not just looking at art. You’re stepping back in time. You’re experiencing the rich cultural heritage of León and Nicaragua. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore this treasure. It’s a unique and unforgettable experience.
